Understanding Risks & Limitations

We ask that patients understand and acknowledge that there are limitations to the technologies that exist, and that there are some risks to surgery and procedures. These risks include but are not limited to bleeding, infection, damage to the eye or eyelid, overcorrection, under correction, and the need for additional or revision surgery. There is a remote risk of vision loss. These risks are rare, but patients need to be informed of these possibilities even though they may be improbable.

Realistic Expectations

There is also the possibility of unrealized expectations, particularly when those expectations are unlimited or unrealistic. This is an "expectation risk". Dr. Silkiss makes a practice of explaining the likely outcome of a procedure or surgery, along with the caveats of surgery. It is important that your expected vision of the outcome of a surgery or procedure be aligned with realistic outcomes. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to discuss these in detail with Dr. Silkiss.

Open Communication

We practice open communication. Although we are delighted to receive 5-star social media reviews, we find the use of negative social media commentary an obstruction to care—it damages our trust in our patient and does not serve the best interests of the patient. In the event of a concern, please contact us directly. We are committed to integrity, fairness and the best possible outcome for all our patients.

Surgical Revision Policy

Guidelines for Surgical Revision Procedures

This policy outlines the procedures and criteria for surgical revision at Silkiss Eye Surgery. Surgical revision refers to a follow-up operation performed to correct or improve the outcome of an earlier surgical intervention. Our goal is to ensure patient safety, optimize clinical outcomes, and maintain exacting standards of care.

Indications for Surgical Revision

  • Complications arising from the initial surgery, such as infection, bleeding, or inadequate healing. These procedures will be managed by Dr. Silkiss, if within her scope of practice, and be handed to the patient's insurance company for billing. The patient will be responsible for copays, deductibles and fees not covered by the insurer.
  • Inadequacy of the original cosmetic procedure to achieve the desired clinical cosmetic outcome. In the event, Dr. Silkiss agrees with the patient's concern and believes she can improve the outcome, Dr. Silkiss will offer to perform the revision surgery without charging a professional fee. However, the patient will be responsible for operating rooms and anesthesia fees. The revision can take place within one year of the surgical date.
  • If a patient has undergone a functional procedure covered by insurance and wishes an enhanced cosmetic outcome, the patient will be responsible for professional, operating room and anesthesia fees. This would be considered a cosmetic, non-insurance covered procedure.

Post-Revision Care and Follow-Up

Patients undergoing surgical revision will receive post-operative care, including monitoring for complications and regular follow-up appointments.

Silkiss Eye Surgery is committed to excellent, quality outcomes leading to high patient satisfaction.

Second Opinion Revision Surgery

Navigating a surgical outcome that didn't meet your expectations can be incredibly difficult, but expert care is available to help you move forward.

Second Opinion or Revisional Surgery with Dr. Rona Silkiss

Dr. Silkiss and her dedicated team at Silkiss Eye Surgery are here to assist you with second opinions and corrective procedures. Because of her specialized expertise in oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgery, she is frequently sought after by patients and referring physicians to address complex post-surgical problems.

The Path to Recovery

  • Time and Healing: It is natural to feel disappointed if your initial surgery did not yield the desired result. In many cases, Dr. Silkiss may recommend conservative management first, as the body often needs 6 weeks to 12 months to fully heal before additional surgery is considered.
  • Expert Correction: As the Chief of Oculofacial Plastic Surgery at California Pacific Medical Center, Dr. Silkiss has over two decades of experience in meticulous functional and cosmetic corrections.
  • Comprehensive Consultation: Your consultation will include a deep dive into your previous results and medical history. Dr. Silkiss will assess the area for complications and develop a personalized surgical plan to help achieve your goals.

What to Keep in Mind

  • Surgical Realities: All surgery carries risks, and even the best surgeons must occasionally address post-operative issues. A positive outcome is often a matter of specialized management and finding a surgeon committed to your improvement.
  • Expectations and Costs: Revisional procedures are often more complex than original surgeries. While Dr. Silkiss strives to make the process as smooth as possible, patients are responsible for consultation and surgical fees, as these reflect the specialized nature of the care provided.
There will always be fees for the patient for visits or surgeries. It is reasonable to expect charges for a problem that is more complicated to address and treat than it might have been originally. Although in rare cases your referring physician may offer to pay for the services, you should not necessarily expect them to offer, as there were inherent risks involved when you elected to proceed. However, if they do offer, you are still financially responsible for your own fees with our office. Any reimbursement to you will be between you and your referring physician.
  • Recovery Care: The recovery process will mirror your previous surgical experience, requiring rest, cold compresses, and avoiding strenuous activity for several weeks.
